Theodore Roosevelt - George Washington chose the location for the White House in 1791, but it wasn't officially given its current (and most famous) name until much later. Still unfinished when John Adams became the first president to move into the building in 1800, the mansion underwent a series of restorations and expansions throughout the early 19th century. Around this time, according to the White House Historical Association, newspapers began referring informally to the residence as the White House. Still, the name didn't become official until President Theodore Roosevelt made it so in 1901. (Prior to this, it had been called the \"President's House,\" the \"President's Palace,\" and the \"Executive Mansion.\") Interestingly, Roosevelt was also behind a major renovation that moved the president's office to the new Executive Office Building — now called the West Wing. :
