“Pretty in Pink” - Don’t you forget about John Hughes’ place in history as the quintessential filmmaker of adolescent coming-of-age films in the ‘80s. But did he direct all of his movies with teens at the center? Not quite. While he did write the screenplays for “Sixteen Candles” (1984), “The Breakfast Club” (1985), “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986), and “Pretty in Pink” (1986), “Pretty in Pink” was the only one he did not direct. Instead, Howard Deutch took his place behind the camera in his directorial debut. Deutch also shot music videos. “It was that time when everybody was starting to do that. So, he asked if I would do one for ‘Sixteen Candles,’ and he liked it. So, that’s how it happened.” Deutch would go on to direct another of Hughes’ screenplays, “Some Kind of Wonderful” (1987). Deutch met his future wife, Lea Thompson, while making the film.:
