While he did write the screenplays for “Sixteen Candles” (1984), “The Breakfast Club” (1985), “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986), and “Pretty in Pink” (1986), “Pretty in Pink” was the only one he did not direct. Instead, Howard Deutch took his place behind the camera in his directorial debut. Deutch also shot music videos. “It was that time when everybody was starting to do that. So, he asked if I would do one for ‘Sixteen Candles,’ and he liked it. So, that’s how it happened.” Deutch would go on to direct another of Hughes’ screenplays, “Some Kind of Wonderful” (1987).
