Maui, Hawaii - The Grand Wailea hotel on the Hawaiian island of Maui houses a slate of impressive water features: The pool area encompasses more than 25,000 square feet and 770,000 gallons of water, with nine individual pools on six different levels. There are waterslides, waterfalls, caves, and even a river with whitewater rapids. Among these features is the world’s first and only water elevator, built in 1991 to help the resort owner’s physically disabled son travel back up from the bottom of the water slides. Water is pumped into a cave-like room, which lifts a metal platform to the top of the water park — requiring about 16,000 gallons of water to go up and down.:
