...Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt quit his job when the Spanish-American War broke out. He left to lead a regiment of volunteers calling themselves the Rough Riders. "Teddy" and his regiment played an important part in the Battle of San Juan Hill and took part in other operations in Cuba. Nominated in 1916 for the Medal of Honor, the Army cited a lack of evidence for his reported heroism at San Juan Hill. He received the decoration posthumously in 2001. Source: History.com
