[Answer] What was the original name of New York?

Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What was the original name of New York?"

...The city is so nice that they named it twice! The colony of New Netherland was established by the Dutch West India Company in 1624 and it spread to present-day New York City and parts of Long Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey. A Dutch settlement in the colony grew up on the southern tip of Manhattan Island and was named New Amsterdam. In 1626, the Dutch governor Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan from the local tribe from whom it gets its name. In August 1664, the British took over the settlement from the Dutch by force and immediately named it New York, after the Duke of York.
