Step 2 : Answer to the question "In Jesus’ parable about two men praying in the temple, which man prayed, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner”?"

The tax collector - Jesus loves using a good story to drive home a point. In this case, he told the parable to those who were trusting in their own righteousness, and were using that “righteousness” as an excuse for treating other people with contempt. The story went like this: a Pharisee and a tax collector went into the temple to pray. The Pharisee thanked the Lord that he was not like other men, comparing himself to some of the worst people he could think of. He mentioned extortioners, unjust people, adulterers, and the very tax collector in the temple with him. He also bragged about his extra fasting practices and all the tithes he gave. In contrast, the tax collector stood far off and did not even raise his eyes to heaven, as was the usual posture of prayer for that culture. He kept his head bowed in recognition of his unworthiness. He beat his breast and begged God, “Be merciful to me, a sinner!” “I tell you,” Jesus said, “the tax collector went home justified, rather than the other.” The Pharisee was relying on his own merits, but the tax collector knew he needed God’s mercy.:
