What's even creepier is that the plague could have been stopped had Pope Gregory IX not been so darn terrified of cats. Black death was spread by rat bites and since the Pope had ordered all the cats to be slain, rats carrying the plague ran ramped through the streets wiping out a third of the population of Europe.
