Then, he became a hermit and lived in the Syrian desert where he studied Hebrew. The other monks didn’t play well with Jerome so eventually he found his way to Bethlehem, where he sat in a dark cave just a few feet from the supposed birthplace of Christ, translating what we now call the Vulgate - the principal Latin version of the Bible.:
