In 1997, Green set the land-speed record when he reached 763.035 miles per hour in his jet-propelled Thrust SSC equipped with two Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, the same kind used in the F-4 Phantom II fighter jets. Green described his history-making run, which has yet to be beat, as “bordering on uncontrollable”. In other words, don’t try this at home. Interestingly, during Green’s run, he reached speeds that broke the sound barrier, and his crew could hear two distinct sonic booms. When asked about it afterwards, Green admitted that he did not hear the booms. It seems that when one is moving that fast, the sonic booms cannot be detected. :
