Its roots stem from a campaign run during the early 1900s, when Englishman William Willet proposed that Britain move its clocks forward so they could enjoy more of the season’s sunlight. He was a decently rich guy and spent a lot of money trying to convince the government and his fellow countrymen, but no one actually did it until the First World War, when the German Empire and its ally, Austria, implemented it as a way to save electricity. The Germans made their first “spring forward” on April 30, 1916, and were followed closely by Britain a few weeks later. Certain communities in Canada implemented DST in 1908, but Germany was the first entire country to do so.:
