Hadrian's Wall - The Romans were master builders who linked an over 2-million-square-mile empire with roads, staged mock ship battles in the Colosseum by flooding it, and designed a sophisticated system of aqueducts that were powered exclusively by gravity. As impressive as these and other feats of engineering were, the Romans' largest continuous structure was a 73-mile long wall that came equipped with 17 forts to keep the Caledonians of what is now present-day Scotland from raiding the empire’s conquered territory in Great Britain. Originally built in only a few years, using stone for a 41-mile stretch in the East and turf for the remaining western portion, it was later upgraded to become one long stone wall. The initial stage of construction was completed around 130 CE, but Hadrian’s successor, Antoninus Pius, abandoned the wall when he launched new efforts to conquer Scotland and established fortifications further north known as Antonine’s Wall. His wall lacked staying power, however, as Roman soldiers abandoned it when he died and returned to their forts along Hadrian’s Wall where they remained until Roman forces withdrew from Great Britain completely in 400 CE.:
