The highway runs from Torquay to Allansford in the southern Australian state of Victoria, a distance of 151 miles (243 kilometers), and was built almost entirely by Australian veterans of the First World War. Construction started in September of 1919 and finished in November 1932. It’s been a war memorial since the start, with the opening ceremony including the dedication of the highway as a memorial by Lieutenant Governor Sir William Irvine.:
