Italy - Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, which is part of modern-day Italy; he later moved to Portugal and eventually Spain. Before his famous voyage to North America, he took part in shorter treks around the Mediterranean and Africa, where he learned about water currents and sailing distances. But the biggest target for explorers at the time was a shorter, safer water route to Asia. After he was refused funds for previously proposed excursions westward, Spain finally agreed to finance a trip in 1492. Columbus set sail from Palos de la Frontera, Spain, in August of the same year and on October 12, he arrived in the Bahamas — which are definitely not in Asia. Despite veering a bit off-course, he promptly claimed the islands for Spain, and later explored Cuba, Hispaniola, and the Dominican Republic. On a later trip, he explored what is now modern-day Venezuela before returning to Spain for good.:
