Tallahassee - Located in northern Florida, Tallahassee is the capital city of the Sunshine State. Once a Spanish territory, Florida was ceded to the United States in 1821. At that time, there was a need to establish a territorial government, so naturally, the people assumed the capital would be in either St. Augustine or Pensacola, two of the largest and oldest cities in the territory. These two cities, however, are on opposite sides of the state. It was clear that a more centrally located capital was needed. Tallahassee, a former Native American village, was selected because it was halfway between Pensacola and St. Augustine. It was named the capital in March of 1824, even though Florida wasn’t granted statehood until 1845.:
