Step 1 : Introduction to the question "When is National Flashlight Day in the U.S.?"
...The U.S. loves its 'national' days. National Flashlight Day comes around each year on the shortest day of the year, or the Winter Solstice. On January 10, 1899, David Misell, a British inventor, received a U.S. patent on behalf of American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company for an electrical device that made use of the newly-invented dry cell battery and miniature incandescent light bulbs. Misell's device relied on "D" cell batteries inserted end-to-end within a paper tube. He attached a light bulb and brass reflector at the end. Misell's company donated some of the new flashlights to New York City police, who enthusiastically approved of them. Source: NationalDayCalendar.com
