Lebanon - The Baalbek Roman Ruins, in present-day Lebanon, have been around for over 10,000 years. With such a long life, it shouldn't be surprising that the structures have been used for many purposes. They originally served as a temple to the Phoenician goddess Astarte and god Baal. This changed when Constantine the Great exercised Christian influence over the Roman Empire. The temple's role shifted once again in 637 AD, when Islamic rulers converted it into a fortress with an added mosque. After ownership passed to the Ottoman Empire, neglect and natural forces caused it to fall to ruin. It remained this way until 1898, when German Emperor Wilhelm II began restoration efforts.:
