A horse-racing term - “The Big Apple” is the most well-known nickname for New York City, but the term has less to do with fruit than it does with horse racing. In the 1920s, sports journalist John J. Fitz Gerald published a horse-racing column in “The Morning Telegraph” newspaper called “Around the Big Apple”. In horse-racing terms, a Big Apple meant major prize money that was available at larger races, and the biggest horse races in the area at that time were in New York City. Fitz Gerald had heard two stablehands use the term to describe the city; inspired by their vernacular, he introduced his column by stating, \"The Big Apple. The dream of every lad that ever threw a leg over a thoroughbred and the goal of all horsemen. There’s only one Big Apple. That’s New York.” :
