Germany - For many, it’s time to light the Advent wreath. The wreath, with its four candles (one for each Advent Sunday), was invented in Germany in 1839. It was there that Johann Hinrich Wichern, who founded the Home Mission movement in Germany, built the first wreath of wood with 24 candles — 4 big and 20 small for the weekdays. The Advent wreath evolved to what it is today, made with fir branches and cones, along with ribbons, ornaments, and, of course, the same four candles. Light one each week as you count it down.:
