1959 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s signed the Alaska Statehood Act to make Alaska the country's 49th state on January 3, 1959. The president did the same for the Hawaii Admission Act, which paved the way for Hawaii to join the Union on August 21, 1959. At the time, nearly a full half-century had passed since the U.S. had welcomed a new state.
