Chile - The Atacama Desert in Chile covers about 41,000 square miles on the western side of the Andes Mountains. NASA has concluded that it is one of the driest deserts in the world, seeing little or even no significant rainfall. In fact, the average rainfall in this area is a mere 0.6 inches per year. Interestingly, the dry terrain has been found to be very similar to soil in samples taken from Mars missions. This might be why NASA uses this unforgiving desert as a testing site for new equipment bound for the Red Planet.:
