Mount Rushmore, which features U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, was built between 1927 and 1941. Gutzon Borglum, the structure’s designer and sculptor who imagined the secret room, passed away in 1941, leaving the hidden chamber empty for decades. It wasn’t until the late ‘90s when the project was finished. Today, the vault is fitted with panels commemorating the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and other historical documents, as well as a biography of Gutzon Borglum.:
