Bass Strait - Tasmania is an island state of Australia, located about 150 miles off the southern shores of Victoria and separated from the mainland by the Bass Strait. Tens of thousands of years ago, though, Tasmania was actually connected to the mainland by a land bridge. It became isolated around 10,000 years ago, when sea levels rose and flooded what is now the Bass Strait. Named after explorer George Bass in 1798, the channel has a depth of 180 to 240 feet and connects to both the Great Australian Bight (to the west) and the Tasman Sea (to the east).
