The bridge's granite blocks were marked, taken apart, and shipped across the Atlantic. After arriving in California by way of the Panama Canal, all 10,000 tons of rock were loaded onto trucks and driven into the Arizona desert. Reassembly was a painstaking process, as you might imagine, but the bridge did open in its new home by 1971 and has puzzled tourists ever since.:
