Christ the Redeemer - Workers had to do some reconstructive surgery on Rio de Janeiro's famed Christ the Redeemer statue in 2014, after it was struck by lightning in January of that year. The strike chipped the statue's right-hand thumb just weeks after its middle finger was damaged in a separate storm. According to the National Institute for Space Research, the massive monument is actually struck by lightning three to five times a year, but the strikes rarely cause any harm to the statue. The 2014 storm, however, saw an especially high number of lightning strikes — more than 1,000 in three hours, according to Smithsonian Magazine. The statue, whose arms span 92 feet, had previously undergone a $4 million restoration in 2010. :
