According to National Geographic, which used 2017 data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, Hawaiians live an average of 81.5 years from birth, which puts it in the same range as countries including the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, and Portugal. The state with the second-highest life expectancy in 2017 was California, at 80.9 years. Rounding out the top five: New York (80.8), Minnesota (80.7), and Connecticut (80.6). :
