He was employed by Spain to find a western route to Indonesia’s rich Spice Islands. In November 1520, he and his small fleet became the first European explorers to reach the Pacific from the Atlantic. The men didn’t quite know where they were, but Magellan named the body of water “Pacific” (from the Latin word pacificus, or “tranquil”) because the waters were peaceful.
