The remaining four main layers are the troposphere, the mesosphere, the thermosphere, and the exosphere. The troposphere is the lowest layer, extending from the earth's surface to between 4 and 12 miles high, according to the National Weather Service. The stratosphere is above that, followed by the mesosphere, the thermosphere, and then the exosphere, which extends to more than 6,000 miles above the earth. The layers are defined by temperature changes, chemical composition, and density — the higher the layer, the thinner the air
