Brooklyn - Despite its name, the New York Public Library does not have branches in all five boroughs. You'll find NYPL branches in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, but not in Brooklyn or Queens. The reason dates back to 1898, when New York City's consolidation plan combined the nation's largest city with its fourth-largest: Brooklyn, which until then had been a separate city. The same plan brought in the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. New York City's public library system took over libraries in the Bronx and Staten Island, but both Brooklyn and Queens kept their own library systems, which they have to this day. Happily, all New Yorkers are eligible for library cards with all three systems.:
