1893 Chicago World's Fair - The 1893 Chicago World's Fair, also known as the World's Columbian Exposition, featured several major inventions and innovations, including, notably, the original Ferris Wheel. A Pittsburgh engineer named George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. created the Ferris Wheel as an answer to the Eiffel Tower, which debuted at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. His team had been charged with creating something equally splashy and memorable to serve as the centerpiece of the Chicago World's Fair. The Ferris Wheel was a huge success, drawing more than a million people over 19 weeks that summer. Each person paid 50 cents for a 20-minute ride and a spectacular view. Elsewhere at the fair, William Wrigley, a local soap and baking soda salesman, debuted two new flavors of chewing gum: spearmint and Juicy Fruit. :
