Boston - The Boston Subway may not spring to mind when you think of famous U.S. transportation systems, but it should. Boston was the very first city to introduce a subway system in America. Built in 1897, the subway is the direct result of the advances in technology that the Industrial Revolution brought to Massachusetts. The late 19th century saw the invention of the electric motor, and Boston’s West End Railway owner, Henry Whitney, had these installed on his trolleys, which thereafter ran on electricity. And bingo – the first subway in America was born!:
