Hawaii - On January 18, 1778, Captain James Cook became the first European to set foot on the Hawaiian Islands. One of the sailors on Cook's expedition was a young George Vancouver. In the 1790s, Vancouver was put in charge of his own Pacific exploratory mission. Although best remembered for charting the western coastline of North America, he frequently wintered in Hawaii and ultimately befriended Chief Kamehameha I. When Kamehameha united the islands in 1793 and became the king of a unified Hawaiian state, Captain Vancouver presented his friend with Britain’s Union Jack. Hawaii flew the flag in an unofficial capacity until 1816 when it was transformed into a flag with the addition of red, white, and blue stripes. There were attempts to alter or replace it over the years, but when Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1898, it chose to keep the classic striped Union Jack flag.:
