First built in the late 19th century, the home at Number One Observatory Circle has housed the VP since 1977, when Walter Mondale moved in for the duration of his time in office. According to the White House, the residence was originally intended for the USNO superintendent, and then the chief of naval operations, but Congress agreed to refurbish it for the vice president in 1974.
