The “nugget” was more than a nugget; it was a seventeen-pounder, likely the boy’s biggest catch ever in the creek located on the family’s property. Those in neighboring counties also mined for gold, and the region was soon overrun with gold diggers. One of them was the designer of the U.S. Capitol, William Thornton, who began the North Carolina Gold Mine Company, after buying up 35,000 acres in Montgomery County.:
