French troops were not officially withdrawn from the country, however, until the end of 1946. By then, Lebanon had become a founding member of the Arab League and of the United Nations. Bechara El Khoury was elected to serve as the first president of the newly independent country and he, in turn, appointed Riad al-Solh to be Lebanon’s first prime minister. In fact, it was the election and appointment of these officials on November 8, 1943, that led to a retaliation by the French and united the Christian and Muslim citizens to join forces to oust the French.:
