Step 1 : Introduction to the question "Which destroyer struck PT-109 on August 1, 1943?"
...A Patrol Torpedo boat, or PT boat, was a small boat designed to fire torpedoes at Japanese destroyers. On the night of August 1, 1943, while trying to position his PT to fire on the Japanese destroyer "Amagiri," Lt. John F. Kennedy and his crew saw their boat destroyed when the Japanese ship rammed it. PT-109 took on water and went down the following morning. Kennedy and his eleven surviving men swam three and a half miles to a small island. For seven days, Kennedy kept his men alive and worked toward rescue. His heroic efforts paid off with the survivors of PT-109 reaching the U.S. base at Rendova on August 8. Source: JFKLibrary.org
