The Census Bureau estimates that New York experienced a loss of approximately 0.4%, or 76,790 people. Three other states (Illinois, West Virginia, and Louisiana) lost more than 10,000 people, while six states (Connecticut, Mississippi, Hawaii, New Jersey, Alaska, and Vermont) lost between 370 and 6,300 people. The Census Bureau attributes at least some of these losses to fewer births and a decline in domestic and international migration. On the flip side, 40 states saw an increase in population between 2018 and 2019, with the biggest relative growth in Idaho, which saw a 2.1% gain.:
