Volgograd - Tsaritsyn, a city founded in the mid-1500s, served as a battleground during the Russian Civil War in 1918. There, Stalin forged a battle against the White Army, building up the defenses around the city. That’s why, shortly after the war, the city was renamed in his honor. It later became an important location in WWII, when the Battle of Stalingrad saw the Soviets defeat the Germans and their allies in the largest confrontation during the war. It wasn’t until Nikita Khrushchev’s reign in 1961 when the city’s name was remodeled in an attempt to de-Stalinize the Soviet Union and his “cult of personality.”:
