He and his brother, Charles, became fascinated with Jessie James and stories of his daring robberies. The brothers got to meet James in 1880 and shortly afterward, began to hang around on the fringes of the James Gang. The gang's numbers were lagging, so when the two wanted to join Jessie's gang, he let them. Neither brother ever played much of a role in the gang, however, with Robert generally considered a 'hanger-on.'
