Step 2 : Answer to the question "Who was the first American woman in space?"

Sally Ride - As of March 2020, a total of 65 women have been to space. The first overall was cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who flew aboard the Soviet Union's Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963. Almost exactly two decades after her historic trip, on June 18, 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space, and the third overall (following Svetlana Savitskaya, also from the Soviet program). Ride, an astrophysicist as well as an astronaut, was one of only six women picked — from a pool of more than 1,000 applicants, according to Biography.com — to be a part of NASA's program. She made her first flight into space alongside four other crew members on the Challenger Space Shuttle's mission STS-7. Dozens of other women have since followed in her footsteps, including, more recently, Jessica Meir and Christina Koch, who completed the first all-female spacewalk in October 2019. :
