Donkey Kong - Mario is Nintendo's most recognizable protagonist. Since his debut nearly four decades ago, he has appeared in more than 200 games — including all of those presented as possible answers to this question. (Yes, even 1986's succinctly titled NES game Golf — he didn't look like the Mario we know, but the game's instruction booklet nevertheless identified him by name.) There can be only one first appearance, though, and Mario's came in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. Though the title immortalized the villain — a cartoon gorilla who has since cleaned up his act and now pals around with Mario — players of the game actually controlled the intrepid Mario (then known as Jumpman), who hopped over rolling barrels to rescue a damsel in distress. (The damsel in question was a character named Pauline; Princess Peach didn't enter the picture until later.) Mario reprised his role in Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong II before teaming up with his brother Luigi in what might be called the first true Mario game, 1983's Mario Bros.:
