Step 2 : Answer to the question "What was the first U.S. state to have two female senators at the same time?"
California - The first woman appointed to the United States Senate was Rebecca Latimer Felton of Georgia in 1922. Her appointment was mostly symbolic, though: Governor Thomas W. Hardwick chose her to fill the late Thomas E. Watson's recently vacated seat in his own self interest, and she served only one day before her replacement was sworn in. A decade later, Hattie Caraway of Arkansas became the first woman to actually be elected to the Senate. After being appointed to her late husband's seat in 1931, Caraway won a full term on her own in 1932 and was reelected in 1938. More women followed in the 1940s, '50s, '60s, '70s, and '80s, but it wasn't until 1993 that California became the first state to have two concurrent female senators, Democrats Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein. Boxer served until 2017, while Feinstein is still in service today. She's one of 26 women (out of 100 total members) currently in the U.S. Senate.:
