Officially termed the Naval Support Facility Thurmont, the camp was completed in 1938 to house federal government agents and their families. However, President Franklin D. Roosevelt took it over shortly after in 1942, naming it “Shangri-La,” which was a Himalayan paradise in “Lost Horizon,” a novel by James Hilton. In 1953, the site was renamed Camp David by Dwight Eisenhower to honor the president’s father.:
