It was a dark and stormy night when Lord Byron issued a challenge to his houseguests at Villa Diodati: Write the best ghost story. Mary Shelley was among these guests; she had traveled with her partner, poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, to vacation with Byron in a house by Lake Geneva in the summer of 1816. Thanks to a volcanic eruption the previous year, much of Europe was covered in ash, fog, and frost, making for a less-than-ideal beach vacation. Subsequently, Byron's houseguests were forced to entertain themselves inside by telling ghost stories by candlelight, which is what prompted his literary challenge. According to History.com, one guest, doctor John Polidori, was inspired to write the novella "The Vampyre," one of the first fictional depictions of a blood-sucking vampire. Shelley took longer to arrive at her ghost story, but then she had a late-night vision of a "hideous phantasm of a man," and she was inspired to write "Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus." The book would go on to become one of the most influential novels of the 19th century — and it was all thanks to a vacation gone wrong.
