Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What does "EVA" mean to an astronaut?"
...EVA is the commonly used acronym for Extravehicular Activity. This is any activity that requires a crewmember to go outside the orbiter's protected crew cabin environment. When an astronaut goes outside for a spacewalk, he or she uses a space suit called an Extravehicular Mobility Unit or EMU. This suit provides 100 percent oxygen instead of air. The suit's capacity allows for an EVA of between six to eight-and-a-half hours. Since there's no gravity in space, all astronauts on an EVA have to be careful with tools. They follow their 'tether protocol' so they don't float away while walking in space. Source: SpaceFlight.NASA.gov
