According to History.com, inventor and Yale graduate David Bushnell created an experimental craft called \"The Turtle,\" a one-man wooden craft that traveled underwater, propelled by a hand crank and a foot pedal. In 1776, Continental Army soldier Ezra Lee attempted to pilot the Turtle to place a gunpowder-filled mine on a British ship. Unfortunately, Lee had minimal training at operating the craft and failed to plant the mine, which he instead detonated in open water. Several other attempted missions also failed. Bushnell eventually abandoned his creation, though George Washington is said to have proclaimed, \"I then thought, and still think, that it was an effort of genius…\":
