Australia - A Catalan immigrant named José Paronella built Paronella Park by hand from virgin scrubland in Australia. Its 12 acres include a castle inspired by those in Spain, as well as a fountain, waterfall, museum, and the first hydroelectric dam in the region. The park opened in 1935 after a decade of construction, but fell into disrepair after Paronella’s death in 1948 and a series of natural disasters. In 1993 another couple bought the park and restored its distinctive structures, as well as its hydroelectric system.
