Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, on Tuesday stood behind his decision not to do anything about Mr. Trump’s posts on the social network, saying that he had made a “tough decision” but that it “was pretty thorough” and reflected the company’s principles and policies supporting free speech. Hundreds of Facebook employees who had pressed executives to take a tougher stand on Mr. Trump’s posts staged a virtual “walkout” on Monday. The internal dissent began brewing last week after Facebook’s rival Twitter added labels to Mr. Trump’s tweets that indicated the president was glorifying violence. The same messages that Mr. Trump posted to Twitter also appeared on Facebook. But unlike Twitter, Facebook did not touch the president’s posts, including one in which Mr. Trump said of the protests in Minneapolis: “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” On Wednesday, Snap said that it had stopped promoting the Snapchat account of Mr. Trump after determining that his public comments off the site could incite violence.
