Stengel, who ordered a small wooden cottage on the site demolished and replaced with a Neo-Gothic manor. While it doesn’t adhere to the strictest definition of a castle since it wasn’t built as a fortification, it certainly looks like one. The castle — known as the Swallow’s Nest — survived an earthquake in 1927, although it had to be closed because a large crack developed in the underlying rock. The castle reopened only in the late 1960s after an extensive restoration. Since 1975, an Italian restaurant has also operated on the site, and the castle is one of the most famous local attractions.:
