Yukon, Canada - The town of Watson Lake in Canada’s Yukon territory is famous for its colorful signpost forest. The landmark traces its origins to 1942, when a U.S. soldier spent time in the town recovering from an injury amid work on the Alaska Highway Project. His commanding officer asked him to repair some directional signposts, and while doing so the homesick soldier added a signpost indicating the number of miles to his hometown of Danville, Illinois. The idea caught on, and visitors continue to bring signs today. There are now more than 77,000 signs in the forest, and if you visit, you can either bring one to add or make one at the Visitor Information Center.:
