New Zealand - The Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge might look like just a bridge between a large gorge in Queenstown, New Zealand, but you might be surprised to know that this bridge is the birthplace of commercial bungee jumping. Though bungee jumping has its roots with tribes in Vanuatu, inspired by this ancient ritual, in the 1980s, New Zealanders AJ Hackett and Henry van Asch began developing bungee cords with help from Auckland University scientists. To show the world that this form of escapism would be safe, in June 1987, both men snuck up to the Eiffel Tower at night and the next morning, AJ made headlines around the world by bungeeing from the building. With the world clamoring to try this new form of escapism, in November 1988, both men opened up the world’s first commercial bungee jumping operation at the Kawarau Bridge, which is still operating to this day. :
